How to forget a painful memory with NLP
Take charge of your mind with NLP Now!
A while ago, someone in their 50s came to me with an unusual request: "I want to forget a failed love affair. Can you help?"
This person had fallen in love with someone in their 20s. It didn’t work out. They both got married to different people - 25 years before we met that afternoon. Both now had grown-up children.
Yet, for decades, they had been haunted by vivid memories of their past relationship-pictures in their mind, voices in their head leading up to feelings of sadness, regret and hurt.
Imagine the impact of this, on a person's life, relationships, work. It's devastating!
What’s more, this person still met their ex. Talk about being stuck in the past!
They weren’t happy, and they knew it.
This wasn’t new to me. Having worked with thousands of people, Alhamdulillah I'm blessed with knowledge of exactly how unresolved emotions can keep us trapped. Been there, done that!
NLP is one of my tools, in such situations. NLP offers simple, effective techniques to help you take charge of your mind. It’s like deleting an old file you no longer need, freeing up space for better things.
Here is one simple thing you can try right now.
First, realize that your current feelings are not the result of what happened in your past. They are the result of your current thoughts in your mind. This is the reason, you do not feel anything about the event, when you are not thinking about it.
Since it is a thought in your mind, you can do whatever you want with it. Try this...
Recall the event, ask yourself. Is there any positive lesson I can draw from this. If yes, what could it be. Then imagine yourself sitting in a room in front of a black & white television. Play the memory on the black & white tv. Now start shrinking the image. Make it smaller and smaller. Perhaps the size of your mobile screen.
Notice the sound, if there was any, starts to reduce as you make the image smaller and smaller. Go ahead and make it as small as your pinky finger's nail.
Now imagine throwing the image into the space and see it going far away from you...until it disappears.
Count backwards from 10 to 1. Then notice how many round things are in your environment right now.
Try to recall the event. Most people find it's gone. If not, repeat the above process a few times.
This is just one of the many ways.
So, I talked to them, guided them through some simple yet effective NLP processes, and just like magic, they felt different. Remember, NLP isn’t magic, but the results it produces are often magical.
