Overthinking: How a Client Went from Tired to Relieve with NLP
Overcome Mental Fatigue with NLP Techniques
He said, “Every few months, the doctor increases or changes my medication. It works for a while, but then I’m back to feeling drained again,”
He explained, “Everything feels like work. If my mother asks me to run a simple errand, like buying groceries, my mind goes into overdrive: I’ll have to get up, open the cupboard, take out clothes, iron them, change, put on socks, grab my keys, open the door, walk downstairs, get to the car, start it, put it in gear… By the time I think about it all, I’m exhausted!”
In my NLP courses, you’ll learn the concept of CHUNKING. Briefly, some people, by default, look at the BIG PICTURE. They think GLOBALLY. On the other hand, some people, by default, look at the DETAILS. They think LOCALLY.
These two ways of processing information have powerful impact on human behavior.
For example, people who look at the BIG PICTURE tend to earn more. e.g., a Financial Controller in an organization or the Director of Sales, both look at the overall performance—The BIG PICTURE. Whereas people who look for DETAILS tend to earn less, e.g., the data entry clerk who looks at every single invoice or the salesclerk who looks at every single sale.
In relationships, when a detail-oriented person is married to a big-picture person, there are significant consequences in the ways they communicate with each other. By understanding these differences and learning to communicate effectively, couples can build stronger, more fulfilling relationships.
So, this client was essentially a DETAIL-ORIENTED person. Interestingly, his job required his skills. He was responsible for preparing legal contracts for his organization.
NLP isn’t about therapy; it’s about LEARNING. His brain had not just learned but mastered going into details—a little too much!
In NLP, we operate from a presupposition that language represents thinking. And from his detailed description, not only did I know what he was doing inside, but I also knew what to do.
So, I taught him to start looking at the BIG PICTURE. His first session was a surprise for him. He kept asking me, “What have you done? My problem just disappeared. You didn’t give me any medicine, still!”
We had several sessions over time, and I kept teaching him how to use his brain more effectively.
I moved to the USA and lost touch with him until recently. He’s now working in the Middle East and is earning a lot more than before.
NLP isn’t magic, but the results you can get with it are magical. I think, for anyone who wants to be better at helping themselves and others, not learning NLP properly is a disservice to yourself and others you can benefit.
