What is Hypnosis (Hypnotherapy)?

There are many different ways to define hypnosis. Here are few common definitions...

Hypnosis is…

1. A sleep like NATURALLY OCCURING state of mind in which suggestions have an EXEGERATTED impact upon the person experiencing it.

2. A mental state of heightened suggestibility usually induced in an individual by using a combination of suggestions for relaxation & fixation of attention.

3.  A sleep-like state, induced by the hypnotist, in which certain unique behaviors like, extreme responsiveness to suggestions made during the hypnosis, as well as physiological responses such as painlessness, occur.

4. An altered state of mind, used as way of expediting change.

People do not change consciously, e.g. a smoker knows the damages of smoking, yet he does not stop it. Change in behavior takes place at an unconscious level. Establishing an altered state of mind assists in producing the desired results.

5. A state of mind in which your attention internally focused. This is also referred as, inward focus of attention.

If you have ever been in a situation in which you found yourself daydreaming, deep thinking such that you did not notice whatever was happening around, you have experienced trance or hypnosis.

6. Dr. Milton H. Erickson said, “Hypnosis is essentially a communication of ideas and understandings to a patient in such a fashion that s/he will be most receptive to the presented ideas and thereby motivated to explore his own body potential for the control of his/her psychological and physiological responses and behavior.”

7. “Hypnosis is a powerful method of communication, such that when you speak others listen, pay attention and follow what is being suggested.” – Kamran Sultan
