NLP was created by Dr. Richard Bandler and John Grinder as a result of their study of human excellence, back in 1970's.

NLP attempts to explain how & why humans do whatever they do. 

NLP  offers many, common sense based techniques to change what you want to change. 

Neuro refers to the nervous system, through which our experience is processed. Notice that all the information you have inside your brain, is over your five senses, you have pictures, sounds, feelings, smells and tastes.

Linguistic refers to language and both inter-personal & intra-personal patterns of communication. It includes verbal and non-verbal (i.e words, tone & body language) aspects of our communication.

Programming refers to the patterns of thinking and behavior that we have learned and adopted in our lives and practiced so much that it seems second nature to us. Patterns that we generate by processing communication in our mind to do whatever we do or stop ourselves from doing.

In simpler terms, “NLP is a study of how humans produce any behavior (useful or not) by processing communication inside their brains. 

Dr. Richard Bandler - co-founder of NLP describes NLP  as "An attitude that leaves behind a trail of techniques" 

In NLP we do not study effective communications BUT effects of communication. You learn, how you can produce the desired EFFECT in your brain or someone else's behavior by utilizing your communication in an intentionally systematic manner.

This is why, NLP is often referred as the science of success and achievement.
